The telescope, complete with the original wood packing crates for the optical tube assembly and German Mount Head, arrived on 18 August from a collector in Belgium. After nearly four weeks of work we completed our illustrated article explaining these telescopes, and now this 4 inch telescope joins our other Unitron telescopes at our on-line virtual museum. Click on image to see enlarged view 64, bytes In time we hope to add some optional accessories for the 4 inch telescope including the Unitron mechanical clock drive, a weight-driven motor based on the mechanics of a clock but geared to rotate the telescope Right Ascension axis about once every 24 hours. We already have some offers of help to add some other hard-to-find accessories for this telescope, these will be acquired over time for our exhibits. While many other people no doubt have accumulated extensive collections of telescopes, including Unitron and Polarex, we know of no where else where the public is welcome to visit and can be so impressed by the presence of those telescopes that helped to stimulate interest at the beginning of the space age as at Company Seven.
Kodak 35 Original & Rangefinder (1939 & 1948)
It is a precision made camera which incorporates a rapid film advance feature and extended picture taking capacity. General Features The Tenax II is designed to use standard length 35 mm film but with a capacity of up to 50 exposures, which is achieved by using a 24 X 24 mm format. The camera body is manufactured from die-cast alloy with a satin chrome finish and covered in black grain leather.

They had simpler lenses, generally three-element Schneider Reomars featuring front-cell focussing. The first four Retinettes were folding Retinettes, all following models were non-folding or rigid Retinettes. Most models were very popular and produced in large numbers, at least one million Retinettes were made. Their abundance makes them a common sight on the second-hand market and they are amongst the best value for money if one is looking for a camera to actually use.
Only the French versions still demand high prices. Retinette type The Retinette type from was the first Retinette model and rather unusual as it is the only folding Retina or Retinette of which the door flips downwards instead of sideways. The trim is also unusual, in particular the corrugated top housing. Also the lens base is corrugated, this was only seen again in the Retina and Retinette All in all a very interesting start to the Retinette series.

US Air Force Black ops and the shuttle part 2: Although not exactly sleepy little towns, nobody would mistake them for bustling communities: Not only would the base have gained a lot of work processing shuttles and the sophisticated payloads that used them, but tens of thousands of tourists would have flooded into the area to watch the launches, giving a shot of adrenaline to the local economies each time.
Many of the launches would have been classified, but notices would have gone out that they were occurring, and tourists would have shown up. That certainly would have happened if ZEUS had ever appeared.

I saw an old wooden view camera and thought I could use it as a working camera. It sat on a dresser in my room for Three months without being used and I guess that started me in to collecting. Over the years I have had as many as old cameras displayed in my era studio in Milwaukee. Cameras were a great topic of conversation with clients and fellow camera buffs.
When I moved to Colorado in December of I sold or gave away all but 80 of my favorite models. Most of these are the large format wooden cameras with brass or other style lenses. The large format cameras are of great interest since I have shot a lot of large film in my studio and on location work over the years. I still shoot a lot of 4×5 film and some 8×10 film.
I still have a working 11 x 14 Deardorff camera but haven’t used it since moving to Colorado.

In an era when most people simply use the cameras that are part of their smartphones, these vintage devices have particular appeal and charm. They are a reminder that photography once required significantly more time and effort than it does today, and they are often technological marvels and things of beauty. The cameras in the exhibit date from the mid s to the mid-to-late s, when digital photography had largely supplanted film but camera phones had not yet achieved their current ubiquity.
The earliest piece of equipment is a large lens dating from the mid th century that belonged to renowned Civil War photographer Matthew Brady. By July , he had patented a machine for coating glass photographic plates. Strong, he founded the Eastman Dry Plate Company in In , the company introduced celluloid roll film, and in , changed its name to the final form, the Eastman Kodak Company. The first cameras were simple wooden boxes, with the shutter cocked by a string dangling out of the body.
Eastman was greatly aided in his camera development by Frank Brownell, a cabinet maker who turned to the manufacture of cameras in the early s.

However, a number of higher-quality lenses that were popular on Pentax cameras and are sometimes encountered on them in flea markets , such as certain Asahi Takumars dating from the s s, are radioactive due to thorium content. To my knowledge, no current or recently-produced lenses contain thoriated optics. Lanthanum is also frequently encountered in high-index glasses and is naturally radioactive, but far less so than thorium.
Lanthanum decay radiation from lenses requires very sensitive equipment to detect. Why was thorium added to lenses? In other words, the thoria glasses could be used to fabricate strong, compact elements that were excellent from a chromatic aberration standpoint. People sometimes wonder about the health and safety implications of these radioactive lenses.
The bottom line is that any health risks are too small to quantify. In principle, you could get cancer from the radiation emitted by a lens, just as you could get cancer from thousands of other environmental causes. Once again, though, there is no statistically-detectable impact from this minimal level of exposure. A more important concern might be for your film if you use a thorium lens on a film camera.
You should not store a shot roll of film in these cameras, as over time the radiation can fog the film. I don’t know the process involved. It was just that the instrumentation we used to monitor personnel and items for release from the plant was so sensitive that it was a complication.

History has taught us that people see better out of free form and it is enhanced by using trivex. Upon dispensing she was asked a number of questions about her visual experience wearing either lens; she loved them both and could not really tell the difference.
We spent a good 10 minutes trying to find any apsects of either product that were an advantage or noticeable to the wearer. She thought both products gave her the best vision she has ever had and either progressive design gave her a similiar feel and she could not tell the difference in any area. I had done the same thing years ago with the Pentax Perfas and a Zeiss Individual; the patient response was the same, either pair gave him the best vision he has ever had and he could not pick one design over another.
If a quality product is fit properly, the patient satisfaction should be similiar with like technology. I support the best technology that is delivered in a timely manner at a fair price; that is the best lens in the market. It also has to be available in the materials, size and curve needed. No wonder it has taken so long for free form to catch on in the US.
