Meet an OHC site host: Jerzy Kenar of Studio Kenar

Architecture is frequently chosen as the profession for characters in the movies and on TV for the simple reason that there is no downside to the character perception of an architect. They can be all the things you want your hero to be without the baggage that comes along with other vocations typically associated with highly intelligent people. Architects can do and be anything the writers of these shows want them to be. Here are some traits — some good and some bad — that almost every formally trained architect around the world share. In no particular order: Do you need something glued? Architects can tell you when to use white glue vs. Do you think you have an opinion?

History of Religious Murals in Spain. The fundamental emblematic structure of the Romanesque was the church. Since churches were built to serve the specific requirements of the liturgy, their construction changed as those needs changed. The relationship between an architectural form and its meaning was reflected in the arrangement of the internal areas of churches, which was based on the complementary relationship between the plastic mass of the building and its atmospheric mass.

Romanesque architects re-used the rounded arches, wall masses and barrel-vaults of the Romans, but they also introduced changes. Indeed, while marked by a cruciform floor plan, the early Romanesque saw the overcoming of Byzantine models and the abandonment of the formal language of classical antiquity.

Lion’s head decoration The Temples In History For centuries the temples of Baalbeck lay under meters of rubble, obscured by medieval fortifications. But even in ruin the site attracted the admiration of visitors and its historical importance was recognized. The first survey and restoration work at Baalbeck was begun by the German Archaeological Mission in In French scholars undertook extensive research and restoration of the temples, work which was continued by the Lebanese Directorate General of Antiquities.

Baalbeck’s temples were built on an ancient tell that goes back at least to the end of the third millennium B. Little is known about the site during this period, but there is evidence that in the course of the 1rst millennium B. An altar was set in the center of this court in the tradition of the biblical Semitic high places. During the Hellenistic period B. At this time the ancient enclosed court was enlarged and a podium was erected on its western side to support a temple of classical form.

Its publication now is not due to its completion, more to answer questions about my disagreement with many accepted dates of military masonry structures in the UK. This discussion is in no way supposed to be definitive, but it is intended to provoke thought, argument and, hopefully, comment. Thomas Much has been written about the dating of Medieval Military Architecture and many theories have grown up through the study of the so-called progression of building styles – from wood to stone – from square to octagonal to round.

The Georgian style was originally popular in the 18th century and was used frequently in early New England settlements. In Vermont, the Georgian Revival emerged in the early s and remained popular into the s. Although the Georgian Revival structures employed many of the details of their earlier Colonial predecessors, they did not closely follow the rules of Georgian architecture. Classical details were either over-exaggerated or updated for the 20th century, and the strict Georgian symmetry and order was usually broken.

The house in the image below breaks that order by placing only three windows on the second story. The small, one-story wing off the right side is a common feature on Colonial Revivals of this time period and is also seen on the image above. Although having the same symmetry and massing as many Federal style structures of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this structure is distinct in its lavish detail i. A house of this style likely dates to the s or s. The true Georgian form is further abandoned.

A number of features characterize structures from this time period. The image below is an excellent example of a s era Colonial Revival style house. The house is sheathed in clapboards, instead of brick veneer, and windows are paired and tripled with six-over-one sashes Colonial Revival structures of this era generally had an upper sash of multiple panes, usually 6,4, or 2, and a single-pane lower sash.

The two-story, eaves-front, symmetrical massing is still present, as are the cornice returns on the gable ends, but the simplified entry porch is the only real detail.
